Richard Gordon is a young man who is employed as an assistant in general practise.  Richard, sees marriage as an obligatory part in his life and thus he has decided to escape himself from it. So, he held up signing a contract as a ship's doctor. This will make him to stay away from his unwanted marriage life for a period of time. He tires to manage himself doing his work, in a tumbledown and dilapidated ship like LOTUS.  This is a tale of nautical diseases and misadventures of sea. But, Richard survives almost and manages, though the life that was stretching before him was not as much as he dreamt of, when he finished his medical.
